[ACU] ACU ranked best in Australia for research and promotion of health and wellbeing

Australian Catholic University (ACU) has been ranked first in Australia and retained its global ranking as the second-best performing university for its ongoing efforts to promote healthy living and wellbeing through world-class research and teaching, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2023.

The THE 2023 Impact Rankings, released on June 1, placed ACU in the top three universities in their assessment against Goal 3 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”.

For SDG 3, THE measured 1,218 universities from 106 countries and regions on their research on key diseases and conditions, their support for healthcare professions, and the health of students and staff.

Australian universities were the most represented institution in the Top 100 against SDG 3, with ACU taking the lead.

ACU also ranked 19th out of 960 universities against SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and placed in the Top 100 for SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). ACU ranked in the top quartile for seven out of the eight SDGs relevant to ACU.

Overall, ACU placed in the Top 200 of more than 1500 institutions, improving the overall score from 86 to 88 (out of 100).

“This year’s THE Impact Rankings continues ACU’s reputation as a leading provider of graduate health professionals in Australia, and further cement the university’s focus on enabling flourishing lives through our outstanding research and first-class teaching,” Vice-Chancellor and President Zlatko Skrbis said.

“The high ranking also acknowledges ACU’s commitment to foster thriving communities through our local health collaborations and outreach programs, as well as our supportive campus environments.

“Being recognised as the best in Australia, and among the top three in the world, for our contributions to the global challenges of health, is an excellent achievement for ACU, and further showcases our strength as experts in health and wellbeing.

”Now in its fifth year and including data for more than 1500 universities from 112 nations, THE’s Impact Rankings provides a comparison of universities against the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainability is a key part of the ACU Mission to promote the common good and social justice. The university recognises its responsibility to cut its environmental impact and place sustainability into its decision making, teaching and research.
